video phone beyonce mp3 AV Festival 10: Aura Satz: Sound Seam

World premiere of this atmospheric film installation exploring sound inscriptions and the material quality of memory. The mesmeric film uses microscopic close-ups of gramophone grooves and the anatomy of the ear, while the accompanying music, composed by Aleks Kolkowski, includes eerie wax cylinder recordings and sounds emitted by the ear. The intriguing 'forensic love story', which draws on the German poet Rilke's 1919suggestion to play the groove-like line of a skull with a gramophone needle, is revealed by listening to the soundtrack through a theatrical array of horns and ear trumpets.

Following its exhibition at AV Festival 10, Sound Seam was presented as a single-screen installation at the Wellcome Collection from 9 December 2010 -- 16 January 2011.
